Capsaicin is a natural plant alkaloid. It is an active ingredient extracted from the mature fruit of the Solanaceae plant pepper. It is mainly used for analgesic, itching and long-lasting effects. Its ointment preparations have been included in the 24th edition of the United States Pharmacopoeia and are widely used in the treatment of: arthritis, muscle pain, back pain, sports sprains and residual neuralgia after herpes zoster.

Capsaicin comes in two forms – natural, which is extracted from the fruit of cayenne pepper, and synthetic, which is produced in a laboratory. The application of both forms appears to be identical.
